GAC GE3

2026-09-21 09:50:00

The Trumpchi GE3 is the maiden all-electric B-segment SUV introduced by GAC Trumpchi, making its global debut at the North American International Auto Show on 9 January 2017 before officially hitting the market on 21 July of the same year. Built on GAC's first-generation dedicated pure electric platform (GEP), it served as a pivotal model in the brand's new energy vehicle strategy and represented its first ground-up bespoke EV rather than an ICE conversion. In 2020, the facelifted GE3 530 variant was rolled out, bumping the NEDC-rated electric range to 410 km. Around 2018, GAC spun off its EV operations into the standalone GAC AION marque, rendering the GE3 a legacy product under the GAC Trumpchi nameplate before it was eventually phased out around 2021, and it now primarily trades in the second-hand market.

Design Language

On the styling front, the Trumpchi GE3 embraces a "Low Poly" geometric design philosophy, employing triangular motifs as its core visual signature. Up front, it features a blanked-off grille housing a blue Trumpchi emblem to signify its EV credentials, flanked by triangular headlights and matching fog lamps that give the fascia a clean, quirky, and highly distinctive look. The side profile incorporates a floating roof aesthetic complemented by 215/55 R18 Michelin Primacy rubbers, with turbine-style alloy rims underscoring its sporty stance. Triangular cues carry through to the rear, where the tail lamps illuminate into dual interlocking triangles, accompanied by reverse parking sensors and a reverse camera integrated into the lower rear bumper.

Inside, the GE3 swaps the exterior's angular themes for softer "racetrack oval" contours across a wraparound dashboard layout. The upper dashboard is finished in soft-touch slush-moulded trim, complemented by stitched leather upholstery on the door cards, offering build quality and materials that stood out among Trumpchi models of its era. In-car displays comprise a 10.1-inch fully digital instrument cluster alongside a standalone 3.5-inch mini-screen perched atop the dashboard called "Guang Xiaoqi", which serves as an anthropomorphic digital assistant showing contextual greetings and prompts. Infotainment is handled by an 8.0-inch central touchscreen running BeiDou/GPS dual-mode satellite navigation and CarLife smartphone mirroring. Dimension-wise, the GE3 measures 4,337 mm long, 1,825 mm wide, and 1,655 mm tall, with a 2,560 mm wheelbase, positioning it squarely in the standard B-SUV segment.

Powertrain and Performance

The Trumpchi GE3 is powered exclusively by a front-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor sourced from Jing-Jin Electric (JJE). The 2017 model-year 310 variant outputs 120 kW (approx. 163 PS) and 290 Nm of torque, while the updated 2020 model-year 530 variant bumps maximum output to 132 kW (approx. 180 PS), with peak torque staying identical. Drive is channelled to the front wheels via a single-speed reduction gearbox, completing the 0-100 km/h century sprint in roughly 9.3 seconds (310 variant) and 8.6 seconds (530 variant), onto a rated top speed of 156 km/h.

In terms of battery capacity and range, the 2017 GE3 carries a 47 kWh ternary lithium-ion battery pack, delivering an NEDC-rated range of 310 km, with up to 475 km achievable under a steady-state 60 km/h cruising cycle. The 2020 GE3 530 adopts CATL's updated 153 Ah battery cell chemistry, expanding capacity to 54.75 kWh with an energy density of 160 Wh/kg, effectively lifting the NEDC driving range to 410 km. DC fast charging is supported, juicing the pack from 0 to 80% in approximately 30 minutes via a 60 kW DC charger, while a standard AC slow charge takes roughly 8 hours for a full charge. Across the board, it is equipped with GAC's third-generation intelligent thermal management system with liquid cooling and low-temperature pre-heating, ensuring stable battery operation in ambient temperatures between -30°C and 50°C.

Chassis and Handling

Underneath, the Trumpchi GE3 rides on front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam semi-independent setup. The front MacPherson layout keeps packaging tidy and compact, while the rear torsion beam is a segment-standard choice engineered to maximise interior packaging efficiency while keeping manufacturing costs in check. It features front-wheel drive, electric power steering (EPS), ventilated front disc brakes, solid rear disc brakes, and an electronic parking brake (EPB).

For drive dynamics, the GE3 offers two primary drive modes: Normal and ECO. Steering weight can be tailored across Comfort, Standard, and Sport settings via the central display, ranging from feather-light in Comfort to noticeably heavier in Sport. Regenerative braking comes with High and Low intensity settings and can also be fully disengaged, allowing the vehicle to coast freely off-throttle just like a conventional petrol vehicle. The 530 variant adds an I-Pedal one-pedal driving mode, enabling full acceleration and deceleration modulation via the throttle pedal alone to maximise energy recuperation.

Cabin and Equipment

Inside, the GE3 features an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment unit and a 10.1-inch fully digital instrument display, complemented by the 3.5-inch standalone "Guang Xiaoqi" companion display on top of the dash providing emotional, animated prompts. The infotainment setup runs the Smart Trumpchi T-BOX 3.0 telematics suite, offering BeiDou/GPS navigation, intelligent voice commands, multimedia playback, and CarLife connectivity. The 2020 530 variant upgrades to the Tencent-co-developed "AI in Car" system, unlocking five core connected services spanning smart voice control, scenario-based features, social integration, content streaming, and value-added functions with native support for apps like QQ and WeChat.

Comfort and convenience appointments are generous, with keyless entry, push-start ignition, electronic parking brake (EPB), automatic climate control, and a PM2.5 cabin air filter fitted as standard across the range. Premium trim levels add a Qi wireless charging pad, a 360-degree surround-view camera system, heated front seats, and Hill Descent Control (HDC). Rear occupants get dedicated air-con vents and USB charging ports. The rear bench features a 60:40 split-folding design, expanding the standard 370-litre boot space to 780 litres with the seats folded flat. Upholstery comes in either fabric or synthetic leather depending on the spec, configured as a standard five-seater.

Safety and Driver Assistance

Safety-wise, the Trumpchi GE3 comes standard with dual front airbags, a tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS), and rear ISOFIX child seat anchor points. Active safety electronics include Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD), Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Traction Control System (TCS), and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Higher-spec variants add Hill Descent Control (HDC) and a 360-degree surround-view monitor.

On the advanced driver assistance front, the Trumpchi GE3 lacks Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, settling for basic passive driving aids such as standard cruise control. While this equipment level was par for the course for Chinese-market all-electric B-SUVs between 2017 and 2020, the GE3's ADAS shortfall grew increasingly apparent as newer rivals rolled out rapid tech upgrades. On the battery safety front, the pack boasts an IP67 dust and water ingress rating and was subjected to comprehensive safety testing including crush, nail penetration, and overcharge evaluations. GAC Trumpchi backed the GE3's high-voltage battery with an 8-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty.

Market Performance and Reception

Overall, the commercial performance of the Trumpchi GE3 fell short of market expectations, registering just 32 units sold during its first full delivery month in July 2017. As GAC Trumpchi's debut all-electric SUV, it suffered from an awkward market positioning—its pre-subsidy pricing between RM222,800 and RM245,800 positioned it above the BAIC BJEV EX-series but below the BYD Song EV300, failing to strike the right balance between value proposition and brand equity. In its early days, it also missed out on the Beijing Recommended Catalogue of New Energy Vehicles, shutting it out of China's largest private EV consumer market, while fleet and corporate purchase orders remained lacklustre. Consequently, the EV failed to build scale and remained a niche player due to quota priorities and limited brand traction.

In the used car market, however, the GE3 found a second wind in the RM30,000 to RM50,000 price bracket, where buyers appreciated its dedicated EV packaging efficiency and solid mechanical underpinnings. The 530 variant typically commands between RM38,000 and RM55,000 on the second-hand market, while the earlier 310 variant changes hands for around RM30,000 to RM35,000. Owner sentiment is broadly positive regarding the GE3's refined and linear power delivery, generous cabin room (with rear legroom measuring 820 mm), and reassuring chassis composure. On the flip side, owners frequently point out mediocre NVH levels—with noticeable tyre roar and wind noise at highway speeds—as well as a stiff rear suspension that compromises ride compliance over rough asphalt.

Notably, reliability data and owner grievance portals highlight a relatively high failure rate with the air conditioning compressor on the 2018 model-year GE3, with some users reporting compressor electrical shorts leading to sudden power loss, which occasionally resurfaced even after component replacement. Furthermore, faulty slow-charging port locking solenoids were a recurring complaint on 2019 models. In summary, while the Trumpchi GE3 served as GAC's pioneering step into dedicated EV platforms and achieved a solid engineering baseline, misjudged pricing, poor market timing, and component quality gremlins prevented it from achieving mainstream commercial success.
